Chronicle: Saguaro Bloom: Part II

Here we are under most impressive saguaro where one lower arm conveniently fruits  at eye level.

The morning is strangely overcast due to smoke from forest fires to the east.

I opt for a simple split complementary harmony using hard conte pastel pencils on sanded, toned pastel paper.

Even though color will dominate today’s study, I still begin with a simple measured contour drawing.  I work on this drawing until everything is generally accounted for including all aspects of space and context (fore, mid and background)

…blue-green, green and yellow-green plus gray and white…

…and to complete the palette; red-orange and yellow-orange accents.

Can’t wait for these fruits to burst open to reveal deep magenta fruit flesh-could be as early as 2 weeks from now.
