Need some help with mountains? Best to make a model, study it, then go outside and study an actual mountain-this way you’ll be better prepared to handle complexity and changing atmospheric conditions.  By the way-Leonardo da Vinci and Paul Cezanne changed history through observing (and recording) mountains.

Build a model out of paper:r4

Tone your paper, place darkest darks, then erase away highlights:r3

Add some temperature contrast with pastel.r6

Use a variety of marks and blending to describe texture and shadow in the subject. Pay close attention to hard and soft edges. Use an eraser or blending tool to soften and break up a hard edge.r8

Tucson is surrounded by really dramatic  mountains-how about it?
